Unlocking the Performance of the New Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen7 Business Laptop with the YMTC PC411 SSD

If there’s one laptop series that defines the business category, it’s undoubtedly ThinkPad. Since its debut in 1992, the line has won over business users with its distinctive design, rock-solid stability, and sleek form factor. As a true veteran in the laptop world, ThinkPad’s secret to success lies in constant innovation. Compared to its predecessors, the new generation integrates the latest hardware technologies—exemplified by the ThinkPad E14 Gen7. This model not only features the Intel Core Ultra 7 255H processor based on the Arrow Lake architecture but also comes equipped with the YMTC PC411, a commercial-grade consumer SSD designed by Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC) for laptops, desktops, mini PCs, and handheld gaming devices. So, how does this new hardware translate into real-world performance? At first glance, the ThinkPad E14 Gen7 sticks to its classic business aesthetic and lightweight design, tipping the scales at just 1.4 kg (without the power adapter). But under the hood, it’s packed with cutting-edge components. Starting with the CPU, it’s powered by the mid-to-high-end Core Ultra 7 255H. This chip boasts 16 cores and 16 threads (6 performance cores, 8 efficient cores, and 2 low-power efficient cores) along with a massive 52MB of combined L2 and L3 cache. The integrated Arc 140T GPU features 8 Xe cores, handling mainstream 3D applications, gaming, and hardware encoding/decoding for AV1 and H.265 video. It also delivers up to 74 TOPS of INT8 compute power. When paired with the processor’s built-in NPU (capable of 13 TOPS INT8), this setup can handle AI large language models, image editing, and video processing without needing a dedicated graphics card.

For a better visual experience that won’t strain your eyes during long work sessions, the E14 Gen7 sports a 14-inch 2.8K IPS display. With a 16:10 aspect ratio, a resolution of 2880×1800, a 90% screen-to-body ratio, a 120Hz refresh rate, and 100% sRGB color coverage, it’s a treat for the eyes. Plus, the Eyesafe Certified 2.0 technology effectively filters out harmful blue light wavelengths while maintaining color accuracy.

On the C-deck, you’ll find ThinkPad’s signature TrackPoint (the famous red nub) combined with a three-button touchpad cluster. Paired with the classic keyboard layout and matte finish, it offers a comfortable typing experience. Double-tapping the TrackPoint even brings up a quick menu for adjusting screen brightness, microphone modes, and other system settings. The touchpad itself is generously sized, supporting multi-touch gestures and multitasking to boost productivity.

Cracking open the D-cover reveals an active cooling system with fans and heat pipes. To the right of the cooling module are two DDR5 5600 SO-DIMM memory slots, supporting up to 32GB of RAM. Below the heatsink sits a large 64Wh battery, and next to it is the new hardware addition: the 1TB YMTC PC411 commercial-grade consumer SSD. This drive boasts impressive specs, utilizing YMTC’s in-house X3-9070 TLC NAND flash based on the Xtacking® 3.0 architecture. It offers an I/O speed of up to 2400 MT/s per die. The 1TB and 2TB models claim sequential read/write speeds of up to 7000 MB/s and 6000 MB/s respectively, fully saturating the PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 interface.

Thanks to this high-performance flash memory, the YMTC PC411 can unleash full-blooded PCIe 4.0 SSD performance with just an advanced PCIe 4.0 x4 controller. Compared to traditional 8-channel SSD controllers, the PC411’s 4-channel chip cuts the number of read/write channels in half, significantly reducing power consumption by 25% and lowering heat output. The combination of a DRAM-less 4-channel controller and 2400 MT/s flash keeps overall power draw as low as 4W (4.5W for the 2TB model), with an idle L1.2 power consumption of less than 2.5mW. This makes it one of the most power-efficient PCIe 4.0 SSDs on the market. The controller also supports Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology, which uses a small portion of system RAM to temporarily store data read from flash, data waiting to be written, and the address mapping table. This boosts I/O performance without the need for a separate DRAM cache chip.

The YMTC PC411 is available in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. Our test unit came with the 1TB version. In terms of endurance, the 2TB model is rated for 1200 TBW (Terabytes Written), the 512GB model for 300 TBW, and the 1TB model we tested for 600 TBW—on par with other top-tier 1TB TLC SSDs.

Top-Tier Overall Performance

We put the ThinkPad E14 Gen7 through its paces using PerformanceTest 11.1, Hardware Dog, and PCMark 10. The results were impressive. In PerformanceTest 11.1, the laptop scored 8094.3 points, outperforming 84% of computers worldwide. This overall score is a composite of CPU, 2D graphics, 3D graphics, memory, and disk performance. Notably, the disk performance ranked the highest: the YMTC PC411 scored 47,474.9 points, beating 96% of other storage products globally. This stellar storage performance played a huge role in the ThinkPad E14 Gen7’s high overall ranking.
